Cinema is important because it's the only art form that allows you to truly experience life through/in another person's eyes/head. We can build alternate realities that are otherwise inaccessible or impossible to grasp alone in our own heads. It helps you grow from fictional experiences. College is new and wonderful but it can also be intimidating. These films will help guide you through some of the many experiences that will take place in your college life.

1) 3 Idiots:

When 3 Idiots released, I was just 8 years old, which is probably an age where kids are heavily influenced by the content they consume. The movie is based around the lives of three engineering students, Rancho, Farhan, and Raju, and how they learn to appreciate life during their college years. Watching Rancho, Farhan, and Raju, inspired me. I couldn’t possibly care less about becoming an engineer, but those moments with the aforementioned “3 Idiots” were special because they make you believe that “All Is Well” (Pronounced: aaall). It’s only now when I’m actually in college that I realize what that actually meant. Everything isn’t going to be great all the time but as long as you believe that it can get better, you’ll be fine. College life isn’t going to be great all the time, so sometimes, you just need to take a step back to learn to enjoy the little things that it has to offer and who knows, maybe you’ll make some of the greatest memories of your life.

2) Monsters University:

I’m a big fan of animated films. Even today, when I’m about to turn 20 in a couple of months, I’ll rush to the theatres when a good animated film is out. Monsters University is a sequel to Monsters Inc. but you don’t need the first part to understand this movie. It follows the story of Mike Wazowski, a tiny non frightening monster and James Sullivan, a scary monster, who find each other at a university for monsters where everyone is judged by their ability to scare humans. Sounds crazy, doesn’t it? As Mike tries to prove that he can be a scary monster and Sully tries to see that there’s more to him than his ability to scare, both of them realize that the grass is not really greener on the other side. In college, you’ll often come across people who might be richer, have more friends, and might be in a relationship, but that doesn’t matter because you’ve got to learn to be happy with what you have.

3) Good Will Hunting:

Good Will Hunting follows the story of a young adult named Will Hunting who is a genius but he works as a janitor at a prestigious university. He catches the eye of a professor when he solves a complex math problem. However, Will had a tough childhood which has an effect on his present, causing him to often go astray. The professor takes him to a psychologist, played by the brilliant late Robin Williams. As they have their sessions, Will goes on a journey of self-discovery and understands himself, realizing that sometimes, the best way to deal with a problem is to express and talk things out. The brightest and most brilliant college students often go astray due to circumstances around them. Good Will Hunting sends an important message to them to stay on course and express themselves without regret while keeping in mind that self-development takes time.

4) The Social Network:

The story behind Facebook. The facts in this film are debatable but you don’t see this film for the facts. As Mark Zuckerberg and Eduardo Savverin navigate through college as roommates and best friends, differences start to wedge between them and drive them apart. Sometimes, in college, you drift apart from people and that’s really okay. If it’s meant to be, y’all will get back on each other’s paths. As the movie follows the bullet train that was the growth of Facebook, you see how the balance between entrepreneurship and life works for students who have a business in college and the mistakes that one should not make. As you get into the second year of college, you might start thinking about your own business and it’ll become more and more important to strike the dreaded work life balance. The Social Network is a wonderful eye opener about the good, the great, the bad and the horrible things that could happen if one doesn’t learn to strike that work life balance.

5) Pitch Perfect:

Pitch Perfect follows an all girls acapella group called the Barden Bellas, which had been known to have unrealistic standards of beauty over talent until a new year where two old members were left to carry on the legacy. They discover new talent and make a group breaking the original conception of beauty over talent. Over the course of the movie, these young girls evolve into a powerful group of women. They divide and fall multiple times before they unite into a team. It’s a wonderful movie which uplifts women and tells them they’re more than just how they look. College students often have unrealistic superficial standards, Pitch Perfect attempts to break that norm. This movie isn’t just for women but it is also for the men who attempt to hold women to superficial norms.

Lessons from these movies aren't going to make college smooth sailing and very easy to navigate, but they do help in increasing self confidence and inspiring us to be better because you will definitely need a ton of those qualities to get through your college life experiences.
